Tools

You will need some tools for wallpapering. You do not need to have any special skills or equipment, but you wont be able to renew your interior without these tools.

1. Bucket
2. Wide taping knife
3. Sponge, cleaning cloth
4. Sharp knife
5. Pencil
6. Brush or rubber roller for the smoothing wallpaper
7. Plumbline
8. Scissors

9. Meter-stick or
tape measure
10. Brush for pasting
11. Working surface (pasting table)

Now lets pace to wallpapering steps.

Step 1. PREPARING THE WALLS

At first remove old wallpaper from the walls. To make it easier you can soak the paper.

If the walls are covered with dispersion paints, oil-based paints or varnish check if these materials are still durable. If not, you can peel off the old paint without any doubt you dont need it any more. If the paint is still good and it doesnt peel off, treat the wall surface with alkali solution. After that wash the wall with water, otherwise adhesives wont be effective and new wallpaper wont stick down properly.

If there are holes or cracks in the walls they must be repaired with filler and finished with plaster, after that the walls must be primed with solution adhesive. Make sure that the walls are dry, sound and clean before you start wallpapering. If youve done everything correctly you can proceed to the next step.

Step 2. CUTTING WALLPAPERS

First check if all the rolls have the same batch number, pattern and colour tone. Add a 10 cm tolerance allowance to each strip length when cutting. Be careful when cutting wallpaper with pattern match! Remember to mark out and cut wallpaper in such a way that the pattern is aligned both horizontally and vertically with the wallpaper on either side. That means flowers match with flowers, leaves match with leaves. Its important to unwind the roll in the same direction.

Step 3. PASTING

It is advisable to buy a specialized wallpaper paste. To begin with mix it carefully and wait till it swells properly. After that apply the paste evenly to wallpaper strips. Fold the ends towards the centre, with a smaller fold to the bottom and a larger fold at the top and roll the length. Leave it for a five minutes rest so that the paste soaks. Note that all paper strips must be soaked for the same period of time!

Step 4. HANGING WALLPAPER

Always start wallpapering near the window. At first mark a vertical line using a plumbline and a pencil and position the first wallpaper length to correspond the line then you are sure to hang all other lengths straightly. Leave a 5 cm allowance for trimming along the ceiling and floor line.

Smooth the wallpaper over to remove the air bubbles, moving from the centre to the edges in a herringbone pattern. That best tool for that would be a soft brush or a rubber roller. If necessary, apply some more paste to the joints. If there are paste spots on the face of wallpaper immediately remove them with a sponge, but be careful and dont scrub the surface. Cut the extra paper at the ceiling and floor with a sharp knife.
